When we decided to move abroad, I was excited… and overwhelmed. The thought of packing up our entire life into a few suitcases and boxes made me realize how much we had been carrying. Physically and emotionally.
It’s tempting to bring everything “just in case”, but the truth is: the lighter you travel, the lighter you feel. Moving abroad isn’t just a change of country, it’s a chance to simplify and start fresh entirely.
This guide will walk you through how to pack as a family with intention. Less clutter, less stress, more space for what really matters.
Before you even touch anything, pause. Packing is not just logistics, it’s an opportunity to reset.
I know many people who want to bring everything: from furniture to car they want to pack their whole life just as it is. Of course you can do that. But I tell you my perspective why you should think twice, especially when moving overseas.
Instead, ask yourself with every item:
You’ll be surprised how many things don’t make the cut when you look through this lens.
A simple journal can help you make three lists: essentials, non-essentials, and things you can buy later. Writing it down brings clarity and makes saying “no” easier.
When we started to go through our things I created three categories:
I was excited when I realized how much extra cash we made by simply let go and sell everything. Sometimes it was just a couple of bucks but bigger things like furniture or our car brought actually some good money into the account.
When moving abroad, your energy will be pulled in many directions. Keeping your own essentials simple makes life easier.
Of course you need all your documents like passports, visas or other important copies. Medication should also be carried. Not only in your suitcase but better in your carry-on. A friend of us made this mistake. Sure enough the suitcase with the important meds went missing.
We bought a backpack that fits a laptop, paperwork, snacks, and everything else you want close by on a flight. Especially when you travel with kids, things add up quickly! This backpack is now our go-to carry-on luggage, and since we travel quite often, it was a really good investment. You can find the link here.
Clothing
When it comes to clothing, think practical. Depending on where you’re going, you might not need your entire wardrobe. For example, when we moved from Germany to Florida, we obviously didn’t need our winter clothes anymore. So most of them went to donation. Clothes we didn’t need right away were packed into boxes.
Electric Devices
Be aware of electrical differences between countries. Your kitchen gadgets, for example, might not work in your new home. But that’s okay. It’s also a good chance to rethink if you really need all those devices.
Tools
If you love crafting or DIY, you might want to take your essential tools with you. Whether it’s for handyman work or hobbies. But even here, moving abroad is a perfect moment to declutter and start fresh with less.
Depending on their age, children might worry about leaving their comfort zone. I wrote an article about moving abroad with kids, which goes deeper into this topic.
Of course, you shouldn’t leave behind your child’s favorite stuffed animal or blanket. But keep in mind, kids don’t always have the ability to let go of their things in a rational way. You might have to guide them through it, and if possible, make those decisions together with them.
When we moved overseas for the first time, my daughter was 6 and my son was 1 year old. With my son it was simple, I knew exactly what he needed. With my daughter, however, we picked her belongings together.
Also remember: kids grow fast. Don’t hold on to clothes that will be too small in just a few months. It’s unnecessary ballast that only drains your focus and energy.
Moving abroad with your family is more than a logistical challenge. It’s a chance to live with less and experience more. Packing minimally doesn’t just lighten your suitcase, it lightens your heart.
Every item you choose with intention is a step toward slow, mindful living in your new home. Trust that you’ll adapt, discover, and find what you need along the way.
For me, letting go of most of our things was the beginning of a more minimal and detached mindset. I started to build a simple yet sustainable inventory, one that feels light instead of heavy.

For more than three decades, my career shaped the way I saw myself. I loved my work, I thrived under pressure, and the titles I carried made me feel safe and important. As an expat, that meant pushing even harder. No one was waiting for me in a new country, everything had to be built…
Moving abroad with kids can feel overwhelming. You worry about school, friends, routines, and whether your children will adapt. I’ve heard it all: I would love to, but my kids have their friends here. I can’t, my kids don’t want to move. My kids are struggling with school already. They need a steady life. But…
Overspending is one of the easiest traps to fall into when you live abroad. Exchange rates, different costs of living, and cultural habits around spending all shape how you use your money. Rents are up, interest rates are high, and everyday items are starting to feel like luxury goods, no matter where you live. Money…
Are you asking yourself why move abroad? Maybe you’re dreaming about a slower life, new opportunities, or simply a fresh start. Deciding to move to another country is a big step, but it might be the most rewarding one you ever take. I remember the moment my husband and I realized: we can make it…
I feel lost. What is the reason of life? I’m 46 and a mother of two. But my children are independent now. So what do I do? I spent half of my life raising my children, managing my family, and doing my job on the side. And all of a sudden, 2/3 of my tasks…
Have you ever wondered why people meditate? And have you asked yourself how to meditate? Meditation is a common practice to reduce stress, quiet the mind and focus intentionally. I discovered meditation about a year ago and ever since it opened up so much creativity and awareness for me. But since I’m a fan of…
